“Are You Listening?”
Let me ask you something that stopped me in my tracks this morning during devotion:
Are you listening?
Not just hearing... Not just nodding... Not just praying when you need something.
But truly listening to God... The scripture today comes from Matthew 25:34–36, where Jesus says:
“For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat,
I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you invited Me in,
I needed clothes and you clothed Me,
I was sick and you looked after Me,
I was in prison and you came to visit Me.”
What’s important to Jesus isn’t how busy we are... It’s how we show up.
And if we’re honest… We are so distracted with our own agendas, our own to-do lists, our own timelines, that we often can’t hear His voice.
Listening Is Partnership:
God desires for us to partner with Him in His work here on earth.
To extend mercy to:
* The hungry
* The poor
* The sick
* The imprisoned
* The hopeless
We can’t help everyone... But we must listen for who He is asking us to serve.
Because here’s the sobering truth:
Our response to His instructions doesn’t just affect eternity... It affects our present prayer life.
Isaiah 59:2 – “Your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear.”
If we aren’t listening to Him… Why would we expect Him to respond to us?
Additional Scriptures to Support This Truth:
* James 1:22 – “Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.”
* Proverbs 3:6 – “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”
* John 10:27 – “My sheep listen to My voice… and they follow Me.”
* Micah 6:8 – “Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”
* Matthew 11:30 – “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
When we listen and obey, His grace carries the weight.
Relatable Scenarios for Women:
She’s overwhelmed with work, family, responsibilities.
She scrolls past a message from someone asking for prayer or help because she feels too busy.
Later she realizes God was nudging her to pause — not for them alone, but to grow her own obedience.
Relatable Scenarios for Men:
He’s focused on building, providing, achieving.
He notices someone struggling but brushes it off, assuming someone else will help.
God had positioned him to be the answer — but distraction muted obedience.
Affirmations:
* I will slow down and listen for God’s voice.
* I am available to be used as God’s hands and feet.
*My obedience strengthens my relationship with Him.
*I am not ruled by my to-do list.
* God’s grace makes my burdens light.
* I will respond when He calls.
Prayer Affirmation:
Father God,
Forgive me for the days I move ahead without listening to You.
Forgive me when my agenda becomes louder than Your instruction.
Open my ears to hear Your voice clearly.
Make me sensitive to the needs You place before me.
Help me to serve with mercy, humility, and love.
Use me as Your hands and feet in my community and beyond.
Today I commit to listening and responding... In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Reflection:
Are you listening…or just moving?
Today I challenge you to take a moment to just slow down, get in a quiet place, and listen for the voice of God to provide you with instructions to that which he would have you to do... Someone’s breakthrough may be on the other side of your obedience... And your peace may be on the other side of your listening.
5 Thought-Provoking Questions for Self-Reflection:
1. When was the last time I paused long enough to truly listen for God’s voice?
2. Have I ignored any nudges from God lately because I was “too busy”?
3. Who might God be asking me to serve today?
4. Is my prayer life hindered by selective obedience?
5. What would change in my life if I partnered with God daily instead of following only my own agenda?
